Safe Walking and Biking Routes to Mid Valley Elementary
What is planned, demonstration projects and new infrastructure!
Puma Path
For 3 months, August to October, we created a Puma Path to Mid Valley Elementary with stencils and a crosswalk, to inspire students to walk 1/2 mile from the neighborhood off of Mud Alley Road.
Cost: $25,000 Youth Active Transportation grant from Governor’s Highway Safety Association
Organizations: Oregon Department of Transportation, County of Hood River, Hood River County School District.
Activities: weekly walking school bus every Thursday at 7am, biking field trips from PE class.
Other grant benefits: new fleet of Woom kindergarten bikes and helmets for education, bike fix-it station, E-cargobike rebates for caregivers or teachers.
Safe Routes to School Plan
Beginning January 2025, the County of Hood River will be starting a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) planning process to identify the barriers for students who walk or bike to school. Mid Valley Elementary is 1 of 6 schools to receive a SRTS plan.
The result is a document that identifies infrastructure opportunities like intersections, bikeways, paths and crosswalks to knit together a network for students to get from home to school.
Parents / Caregivers! This plan is so much better with your feedback. We need you to tell us which streets and intersections give you heartburn or anxiety and prevent you from letting your child walk or bike to school. What is YOUR vision? Use the map below to add your thoughts.
